Going to bed at roughly the same time each night might do more for blood sugar  control than most people realise – sometimes more than what they ate for dinner.

That’s the headline from a new Ultrahuman study covering 227,860 nights of sleep and glucose data from 5,859 adults, gathered with academic collaborators including Stanford’s Michael Snyder. On nights that followed an irregular sleep pattern, overnight glucose ran 6.4 mg/dL higher on average, and time spent in a healthy glucose range dropped by 13.9 percentage points.

Most blood sugar advice focuses on food: less sugar, more fibre, smaller portions. But the amount someone slept or the regularity of their bedtimes is rarely considered. But as a full health ecosystem covering ring, CGM and blood markers, Ultrahuman data has shown the link between sleep and glucose.

Why bedtime and blood sugar are connected

Glucose regulation runs partly on a 24-hour clock. Insulin sensitivity, cortisol and growth hormone all follow a circadian rhythm  set largely by when you sleep and wake.

Move your bedtime around and you’re asking that system to regulate glucose against a schedule that keeps changing.

There are other factors at play, too. People with irregular bedtimes tend to have irregular meal timing, alcohol, late snacking. Tiredness can often lead to reaching for sugary snacks and carbs – so the correlation can run both ways.

The size of the impact

A 6.4 mg/dL average shift, on its own, isn’t dramatic – it’s smaller than the swing from a typical meal. The number that matters more is the second one: a 13.9 percentage-point drop in time spent in a healthy glucose range. Repeated night after night, that’s the kind of change that adds up to a materially different average across a month.

It also lines up with an earlier, separate finding from the same pool of Ring AIR wearers: across 103,490 members, the most sleep-consistent people ran 1.9 to 3.6 bpm lower in overnight heart rate  than the least consistent, in every age band checked, even after accounting for how long they’d actually slept. Two different physiological signals, in overlapping cohorts of wearers, both moving with sleep regularity rather than sleep duration alone.

How to master consistency for real health gains

A practical starting point: pick a bedtime window of no more than 30 to 60 minutes and hold it on weekdays and weekends. Weekend drift is one of the most common ways people break their own regularity without noticing.

Total sleep time isn’t the only lever, and for a lot of people, it isn’t even the easiest one to pull. A consistent bedtime is:

  • Free: It costs nothing and needs no new habit beyond a decision.
  • Visible quickly: Regularity shows up in ring or CGM data within a week or two, not months.
  • Compounding: One early or late night barely registers, but the benefits compound over time.

This finding comes from Ultrahuman’s own research, carried out with academic collaborators including Stanford’s Michael Snyder, and is currently a preprint awaiting peer review – not yet an independently reviewed, published result. It’s also observational: a real association across a very large sample, not a controlled experiment proving cause and effect.
