Put against a 12-lead ECG read by cardiologists, across five hospitals, the FibriCheck algorithm caught 99% of readings taken during atrial fibrillation and correctly cleared 98.7% of those taken without it.
In atrial fibrillation the top chambers of the heart stop beating in time and start to quiver, so blood pools instead of moving cleanly through and the pulse arriving at your finger turns irregular. It is the most common heart-rhythm disorder in the world, and it frequently comes and goes without producing a single symptom. An episode that ends before you think to mention it to anyone is exactly the kind a wearable is placed to catch.
Across five hospitals, every reading was taken alongside a 12-lead ECG, the definitive test a cardiologist would order, with each trace read independently by two cardiologists. Against that reference the FibriCheck algorithm caught 99% of readings taken during atrial fibrillation and correctly cleared 98.7% of the rest.
The result holds outside the hospital, too. In a separate study of readings taken by people themselves at home, unsupervised, the algorithm caught 98.3% of atrial fibrillation with 99.9% specificity.
