Light, deep and REM, scored against brain activity
Accuracy
62%
Four-Stage Sleep Agreement
against a brain-activity reference, on all four stages
Reference standard
FDA-cleared home sleep test (EEG)
Sample size
Based on 23 paired nights
Scored block by block against a brain-activity reference, the Ultrahuman Ring agrees on all four sleep stages 62% of the time.
Staging is a judgement made from brain activity, and no wearable has access to that. The Ultrahuman Ring works the stages out from your heart rate, your movement and your temperature instead, reading the body’s downstream signature of what the brain is doing rather than the brain itself.
The number that gives this one its meaning is the second bar. Across more than 2,500 trained scorers reading the same records, agreement with the consensus score runs at about 83% of a night. Staging is not a task with one right answer, so the human ceiling is the one to measure a device against.
Sleep timing, meaning when you fell asleep, when you woke and how long you slept, is measured a great deal more tightly, and it is the part of sleep tracking most people actually act on.
