Your hands are busy all day without going anywhere. Typing, scrolling, cutting food, tapping a desk: all of it is rhythmic, all of it sits in roughly the frequency band a stride occupies, and a step counter sees the lot. Every phantom step it accepts is a step you did not take, quietly inflating a number you are trying to trust.

Across 60 seated recordings — sitting quietly, typing, eating and ordinary desk work — the Ultrahuman Ring recorded not one step. This is also the emptiest cell in the published literature: no smart ring of any brand has ever been measured for how often it counts a step that was not taken.

The reason the ring holds at zero is structural. It does not count a step the moment your hand moves in a rhythm. It first has to be satisfied that you were walking at all, and it settles that by looking at the whole stretch rather than a single second of it. Typing is rhythmic for a second or two at a time. Walking is rhythmic for minutes on end, and that difference is what the ring reads.
