Figure 1 — Skin temperature alone, scored against each wearer’s own 28-day baseline, across every illness the study’s members reported.

Illness can be accompanied by changes in body temperature, including before or around the onset of symptoms. The change is a fraction of a degree, sitting under the room, the bedding and the ordinary drift of a night’s sleep, so the only way to see it is to know what a normal night looks like for that person and watch how far tonight sits from it. The Ultrahuman Ring reads that from the finger, continuously, every night.

On the nights people reported being unwell, skin temperature on its own had moved clear of that personal normal on 44% of them. The average rise on the night itself was 0.37 °C — found against the wearer’s own baseline rather than against a population average, which is the only way a shift that small is visible at all.

How far it travels depends on the episode. Where the illness was reported as a fever, skin temperature sat 0.52 standard deviations above that person’s own baseline two nights out and 1.89 above it on the night itself; in episodes without a reported fever, it reached only 0.17, while resting heart rate moved instead. That is why a quiet temperature reading is context rather than a clean bill of health, and why the ring reads five signals rather than this one.
