Do hot flushes wake you up at night?

A flush night is no shorter than her others, but it trades 3.79 minutes of REM and 3.01 of deep sleep for time lying awake.

Ultrahuman paired 1,505 nights when a woman logged a hot flush against 43,097 of her own other nights, across 809 members aged 40 to 60 wearing an Ultrahuman Ring between June 2025 and May 2026.

Nights when a woman logged a hot flush were not measurably shorter than her own other nights. What moved was inside them: 3.79 fewer minutes of REM sleep, 3.01 fewer of deep sleep, 3.58 more minutes awake, and skin running 0.207 °C warmer on average.

The numbers

Most of what the night contained moved. How long it lasted is the one readout we cannot call.

  • Total sleep came out 3.82 minutes shorter on average, on a range from 9.75 minutes shorter to 2.11 longer, so we cannot call that a real change (809 members).
  • Time awake rose 3.58 minutes, REM sleep fell 3.79 minutes and deep sleep fell 3.01 minutes, each against the same woman's own other nights (809 members).
  • Overnight skin temperature, against each member's own usual overnight level, rose 0.207 °C on average, and 69.2% of members ran warmer on the nights they logged a hot flush.
  • The lowest heart rate of the night rose 0.52 bpm and the average across the whole night rose 0.45 bpm (809 members).

What changes on a night you log a hot flush?

Figure 1 puts the four readouts measured in minutes side by side, and total sleep is the only one the numbers cannot settle. The other three land clear of zero, and point the same way: time awake up, deep sleep and REM sleep down. Two independent studies found the same about duration. Following 159 women across the menopause transition at home, sleep duration did not differ between those who transitioned and those who did not [1]. In a laboratory where flushes were detected by a sensor rather than reported, women averaging five a night slept about seven hours, the same as women with none [2]. What does show up is the waking: in 168 midlife women recorded at home, a wake episode occurred alongside 78% of objectively measured flushes [3].

Can the Ring see the flush itself?

The Ring can see the heat. A hot flush is a temperature event: reviewing the mechanism, Freedman describes hot flushes as “a rapid and exaggerated heat dissipation response, consisting of profuse sweating, peripheral vasodilation, and feelings of intense, internal heat” [4]. Blood vessels near the skin open and heat moves outward, which is why the skin warms while the core cools. When 11 postmenopausal women were monitored through flushes in a laboratory, finger temperature rose an average of 3.9 °C [5]. The Ring sits on a finger, but it reads temperature across the night rather than second by second, so it catches the residue rather than the spike. Figure 2 gives every member one value: her overnight skin temperature on flush nights minus the same figure on her own others. 560 of the 809 came out warmer; the other 249 came out the same or cooler.

Why do you wake up tired when the hours look normal?

Deep sleep is when most physical repair happens and REM is when the brain sorts through the day, so a night that swaps some of both for time lying awake gives you less of each. Across 18 flushes that arrived during settled sleep in 11 perimenopausal women recorded overnight, heart rate rose by roughly four beats a minute and the calming side of the nervous system pulled back [6]. Our numbers move the same way and by far less, because averaging a whole night flattens a few minutes of anything: the lowest heart rate rose 0.52 bpm, and variability moved too little to call. Women who report night-time flushes also move more in bed, sleep less efficiently and are less likely to wake up feeling rested [7].

What this analysis can't tell you

A tag records what a woman noticed, so a night without one may still hold a flush she slept through or did not log. That pushes the comparison towards zero, so every number here is a floor rather than a ceiling. Tags are usually confirmed the next morning, so we can place a flush only in the night that held it, not the minute. The design compares a woman against herself inside a 30-day window, which controls for who she is but not for what else happened that week. Sleep staging agreement varies across consumer devices measured against laboratory recording [8], so read the stage minutes here as within-person comparisons rather than clinical measurements.

What this means for you

If you slept a normal number of hours after a flush and still woke up tired, the hours were not where the night went wrong. It gave up deep sleep and REM inside those hours. On a night you notice a flush, the total on your sleep screen is the least useful number there. Look at your stages and overnight skin temperature instead.

Frequently asked questions

My sleep looked normal after a hot flush, so why did I wake up tired?

Because the number that looked normal matters least here. Total sleep is a readout we cannot call either way, while REM fell 3.79 minutes and time awake rose. Those are small group averages; one bad night of your own can be far larger. The useful check is whether your stage split and overnight skin temperature look different from your own recent nights; the hours alone will not show it.

What is a hot flush actually doing to my body?

It is dumping heat. The blood vessels near your skin open, you sweat, and warmth moves outward from the core, which is why you can feel intensely hot and then chilled a few minutes later. That is why a finger-worn sensor picks it up as a warmer skin reading rather than a fever. In this cohort the skin ran 0.207 °C warmer on the nights a flush was logged, a small nightly average sitting on top of much sharper moments the Ring cannot resolve.

Who does this not apply to?

Women outside 40 to 60: the cohort here is women aged 40 to 60, so it says nothing about anyone younger or older. Anyone taking medication that changes body temperature, heart rate or sleep, because the comparison cannot separate that from a flush. And anyone looking for a diagnosis: this describes an average night in a group of women who chose to wear a Ring and log a symptom, and it cannot tell you why yours are happening.
