The number the Ring calls your resting heart rate is the lowest beat of your night — a median 56.5 bpm across the cohort, with 65.2% of members sitting below the clinic's 60 bpm floor — and where it lands among people your own age and sex says more than the raw figure does.

Resting heart rate on an Ultrahuman Ring is the lowest beat recorded during your night — around 10 bpm below your own average for that same night, across 231,506 members. The clinic's normal range starts at 60 bpm, and it was drawn for a seated, waking pulse, which is why a sleeping heart so often reads below it. So before you ask whether your number is normal, check which number you are looking at and whose hearts you are comparing it with: Figure 1 takes yours, and tells you where it sits.
The Ring reports three heart rates from the same nights. They do not mean the same thing.
- Across 231,506 members the lowest beat of the night ran a median 56.5 bpm, the average across the night 66.0 bpm, and the daytime resting rate 70.0 bpm.
- 65.2% of members read below 60 bpm on the nightly low. Only 20.6% do on the night average, and only 8.4% on the daytime resting rate.
- The sex difference narrowed with age, from 6.0 bpm before 30 to 2.0 bpm after 60.
- Inside each of the 10 age-and-sex groups, the fifth with the fastest overnight rate ran 16.3 to 27.2 milliseconds lower on heart rate variability (HRV) than the slowest fifth.
What is your Ring measuring when it says resting heart rate?
Your Ring's resting heart rate is the slowest your heart ran while you were asleep. That is the single slowest reading of the night, and one of three rates the same sensor records. Figure 1 stacks all three for the same members on the same days: the nightly low at a median 56.5 bpm, with the middle 80% of members between 47.5 and 67.0 bpm; the night average at 66.0 bpm, middle 80% from 56.0 to 78.0; and the daytime resting rate at 70.0 bpm, middle 80% from 60.0 to 80.0 — each further right than the last. A clinic measures something closer to the third, a pulse taken sitting upright and awake, so the clinical range reads your daytime number but not your nightly one. That range is shakier than it looks. Spodick, a cardiologist, wrote in 1996 that the 60 and 100 bpm boundaries were set by consensus and never formally examined [1]. Among 46,129 clinical-trial participants at very low cardiovascular risk, everyone except the slowest 2% and the fastest 2% sat between 48 and 98 bpm [2].

Where does a resting pulse have to land before it means anything?
A resting pulse means something once you know whose body it came from. Overnight rates sort into age and sex groups far tighter than the clinic's range. In 92,457 adults wearing a wrist heart rate tracker, the average daily resting heart rate was 65 bpm, and two people could both be normal for themselves while differing by seventy beats per minute [3]. Figure 2 shows where that leaves you: five age groups, each sex plotted against the 60 bpm line. All 10 group medians sit below it. The sex difference is real but not fixed: widest before 30 years of age and narrowest after 60. In day-long recordings from 260 healthy people, women's whole-day average heart rate ran faster than men's below age 50 and not measurably different above it [4]. Our own gap narrows without closing.

Why does a faster pulse come with lower heart rate variability?
There are two reasons, and only one of them is arithmetic. The arithmetic half is plain: variability is the spacing between beats, and faster beats leave less room for that spacing to vary, a relationship that decays smoothly across hearts from several species [5]. The other half is physiological. The nerve traffic that quietens a resting heart is the same brake that widens the gaps between beats, so a shift in the nervous system's balance shows up in both readings at once. Reviewing how heart rate and its variability interact, Sacha argues that “the association between HRV and HR is both a physiological phenomenon and a mathematical one” [6]. Figure 3 shows that in our own members. If rate alone set variability, the five age bands would lie on one line. They do not: at 52 bpm, members aged 18 to 29 read a median 54.2 ms against 38.6 ms for members over 60.

What this analysis can't tell you
The window here is the 90 days between January and April 2026. Members appear once, with one median rate and one position in their own group, and nobody is followed forward. Controlled trials tie endurance training to a lower resting heart rate [7], and fitness is not measured here, so a training-driven low rate cannot be told apart from any other kind. Nothing here connects your overnight number to a long-term outcome. The daytime figure is the Ring's estimate rather than a clinic reading. Sex is one of two options in the Ultrahuman app, and it is the only split available. Ultrahuman members choose to wear a Ring and watch their numbers, so this cohort is likely more attentive than a population sample.
Your Ring measures the same things on the same body every night, which no clinic visit can. Check which of the three readings you are looking at before you compare it. Find where you sit among people your age and sex, and watch which way you drift. A rate that runs high for your group and keeps climbing deserves attention. A nightly low under the clinic's floor is, for most members, what a sleeping heart does. The Ultrahuman Ring takes the same reading every night you wear it, so your own baseline builds itself.
Frequently asked questions
My Ring reads lower than the pulse my doctor took. Which number is right?
Both are right, and they answer different questions. Your doctor measured a seated daytime pulse. Your Ring's resting heart rate is the slowest beat of your night, the quietest your heart gets. Across this cohort the nightly low ran around 10 bpm under the same member's night average, and lower again than their daytime rate. So a Ring number below the one your doctor read is ordinary. Compare like with like, and your reading against your own history.
Why does my resting heart rate run higher than a friend's who is the same age?
Partly because of sex and partly because of everything else. Compared with a man's, a woman's heart is smaller, empties a larger share of itself with each beat, beats faster and still moves less blood each minute [8]. A faster rate is what that anatomy produces. Beyond sex, fitness, sleep, illness, alcohol, heat and stress each show up in a resting rate, a few beats at a time. The spread inside your own group is wide.
Who should not read a low overnight reading as reassurance?
Anyone with a diagnosed heart rhythm or conduction condition, anyone taking rate-lowering medication, and anyone whose rate has dropped sharply with no training change behind it. This analysis describes where healthy members sit over one window. It cannot detect a rhythm problem, and a rate far from your baseline is a conversation for a clinician.
