


How Ultrahuman measures steps and movement
Fitness wearables brought step counting to the mainstream, and there's a good reason Ultrahuman Ring AIR and PRO still put a focus on steps and movement. Steps are a reliable proxy for movement; everyone understands them, and they're something you can act on the same day.
The Ultrahuman Ring counts them from your finger, continuously, using the motion sensor in the ring body.

How the Ring counts steps
When you walk, the rhythmic swing of your arm sends a characteristic acceleration pattern through your hand and into the ring. A motion sensor picks it up, and that pattern is the raw material for step detection.
The algorithm reads it two ways at once.
- Peak detection scans for the individual spikes that correspond to each step.
- Autocorrelation looks for the repeating rhythm of walking across a longer window, which is what regular locomotion looks like mathematically.
Running both and combining boosts accuracy across a range of real movement: a slow stroll, a brisk walk, uneven ground.
How step count appears in the app
Your daily total sits on the Movement card, updating through the day. Tapping through opens a 7-day trend alongside your active hours and calorie estimates.
Step count is one of three inputs to the Movement Index, with active versus inactive hours and calorie burn. That's why 8,000 steps spread across the day scores higher than the same 8,000 taken in a single morning walk.

What the research says about daily steps
Walking and step counts are steeped in research that links this most basic form of activity to improved health outcomes.
Each additional 1,000 daily steps is associated with lower mortality, and people walking around 10,000 steps a day had roughly half the mortality risk of the least active group.
An umbrella review of 11 systematic reviews and 14 cohort studies found protection kicking in at around 3,000 steps a day, with risk easing further for each additional 1,000. The lowest risk of any band studied was above 12,500 steps.
Drawing on UK Biobank data from 78,500 adults followed for about seven years, researchers linked more steps, up to roughly 10,000 a day, to lower all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality. A faster walking pace was linked to further reduction on top of the total.
In older women, mortality risk fell steadily from about 2,700 steps a day and leveled off around 7,500. That plateau is specific to that cohort; across the wider evidence, risk keeps falling at higher counts.
What Ultrahuman's data shows
The typical member day comes to 5,743 steps. Across 535,541 members tracked from January 2025 onward, half of all days fell between roughly 3,500 and 8,600.

So a typical day sits well above the 3,000 steps where research shows mortality risk starting to fall. But only about one day in six reaches 10,000, a target that gets cited constantly and isn't where most people land.

How does the Ring count steps?
It detects the periodic acceleration pattern of walking through your hand, using two methods in parallel: peak detection for individual step spikes, and autocorrelation for the repeating rhythm. The two estimates are combined. At rest or during sedentary activity, it returns zero.
What's the advantage of counting from a finger?
Wear time. A ring stays on through the activities and environments where a wrist device usually comes off, so it keeps counting across the full day.
How accurate is it?
Step counting from any wearable is an inference from motion rather than a direct count, so it's more accurate at steady walking and running speeds than during slow or irregular gait. Read cross-member figures as a relative gradient rather than exact counts.
What step count should I aim for?
The research doesn't point to a single universal target. Protection starts as low as around 3,000 steps a day, and risk keeps falling above that; the lowest-risk group in the umbrella review was above 12,500. The app sets a personalized goal from your own history rather than a population average.
Does the Ring count steps when I swim or cycle?
No. Neither produces the arm-swing pattern the algorithm looks for, so those days show a lower step count. That reflects a different movement signature rather than a fault, and workout detection captures those sessions separately.
Does my step count feed into other scores?
It's one input to the Movement Index, a standalone 0-100 daily activity score. It isn't rolled into any other score.
