


Movement Index explained
The Ultrahuman Ring’s Movement Index is a step count with added context. It analyzes the timing of movement, not just steps, to reward regular movement through the day.
The Movement Index is a 0 to 100 score built from three inputs: your step count, how many of your waking hours were active, and how often you train.
A step total alone can't tell a morning walk followed by nine hours at a desk from the same steps taken across the day.

What is the Movement Index?
The Movement Index is a daily 0 to 100 composite of three measures.
- Step count: The day's total movement volume.
- Active versus inactive hours: When that movement happened across your waking day.
- Workout frequency: The number of training sessions detected over the trailing week.
Most activity tracking has used a bare step total for decades. It's easy to read and easy to compare, but it hides the shape of the day.
Volume, distribution, and structured training each move the Movement Index separately.
Total volume of steps or exercise matters. So does whether you sat for six unbroken hours first.
So does whether any of the day's movement was hard enough to train your heart.
There's a practical reason too. The three inputs fail in different ways. Cycling and swimming produce almost no steps. A long desk day with a hard evening session produces few active hours. A week of walking commutes produces no detected workouts at all. Any one input can misread a day. All three rarely do at once.
What the research says about steps and sitting
More steps, lower risk of depression: A review of 33 studies covering 96,173 adults found that 7,000 or more steps a day came with about 31% lower risk of depression than fewer than 7,000. Each additional 1,000 steps a day was separately associated with about 9% lower risk. These are observed associations, not proof that steps prevent depression.
Breaking up sitting matters on its own: Across 4,757 US adults in a national survey, more frequent breaks in sedentary time went with a smaller waist and lower C-reactive protein, a marker of low-grade inflammation.
Nineteen overweight adults aged 45 to 65 sat for five hours, interrupted every 20 minutes by two minutes of light or moderate walking. Their post-meal glucose and insulin responses both fell compared with sitting uninterrupted. This was a controlled trial, so the walking caused the improvement.
One study followed 25,241 adults who reported no leisure exercise at all. Among them, everyday bursts of moderate-to-vigorous activity lasting five to ten minutes came with roughly 40% lower risk of major cardiovascular events than bursts under a minute.
How to read your Movement Index in the app
The Movement card shows the score alongside its parts: steps, active hours and inactive time.
Tapping through opens the hourly breakdown, so a long sedentary stretch is visible as a block rather than as a lower number.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Movement Index only count exercise?
No. Walking, housework and a busy day on your feet all raise it. Structured training is one of three inputs, not the whole score.
Can I get a good score without working out?
Yes. A day with a high step count spread across many active hours can score well with no detected session. Two of the three inputs come from everyday movement.
Why is my score low on a day I trained hard?
A single hard session raises the workout contribution but may leave the rest of the day sedentary. If the session was your only movement, your step total and active hours both stay low.
Does the Ring count cycling or swimming?
Not as steps, because neither produces the arm-swing pattern step detection looks for. A session can still register from the movement and heart rate pattern, so those days usually score lower on steps and normally on workouts.
How does the Movement Index relate to the Sleep Index?
They're separate daily scores covering different halves of the day. The Movement Index reads your waking activity, the Sleep Index reads the night, and neither is an input to the other.
Can the score be high when I'm overreaching?
Yes, and that's its main blind spot. The score reads how much you moved, not what it cost you. Check it against your resting heart rate and heart rate variability trends.
